Renowned for his tackling and commitment, Willy Sagnol has won many fans with his will to win.

National team

A latecomer to the French national team, Sagnol, at the age of 25, was a member of the FIFA World Cup squad that failed to make it past the group stage in 2002. Used at right-back, he has hinted that he would eventually like to swap that position for a place in central defence.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

An unused substitute three times, Sagnol none the less played in four qualifiers - matches which saw the peerless French score 18 goals without reply.

Club

Having spent his early years as a midfield player at the football academy of AS Saint-Etienne, Sagnol's growing reputation earned him a move to AS Monaco FC in 1997 after seven years with Les Verts.

1997: Sagnol was a huge hit in the principality, helping the club to the French title in 1999/00 and proving himself in the UEFA Champions League. FC Bayern München had long admired his skills, and in 2000 paid €6.3m for the stylish defender.

2000: He settled into the Bayern side with relative ease on the flank opposite compatriot Bixente Lizarazu and was one of the unsung heroes of Bayern's domestic and European success in 2000/01 as he made the right-back berth his own with a collection of strong defensive displays. The following term he provided numerous assists, prompting praise from coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.
